PRIVATHAFTPFLICHT
Personal Liability Insurance
Protection against third-party claims for damages in everyday life.

Private liability insurance (Privathaftpflichtversicherung) is one of the most important types of cover you can have in Germany, even though it is not legally mandatory. It protects you from the financial consequences of accidentally causing harm to another person or their property.
German civil law (§823 BGB) establishes a broad principle: if you negligently cause damage to someone else, you are fully liable. There is no cap on private liability. A serious accident where someone is permanently unable to work can result in claims running into the millions. Without insurance, you are personally liable with all your current and future assets.
The policy covers personal injury, property damage and financial loss caused unintentionally to third parties. Common real-life examples include knocking over an expensive item in a shop, a pet in your care injuring a passer-by, or a child accidentally breaking a neighbour's property. Importantly, the insurer also handles unjustified claims on your behalf, saving you the cost of a legal dispute.
The cover does not extend to intentional damage, harm you cause to yourself, or damage to items you have borrowed or rented (the latter can be added via a special clause in some policies).
When looking at policies, it is worth checking a few details: Does the policy cover damage caused in holiday rentals? Is voluntary work covered? Are your partner and children included, or is additional cover needed? Policy scope varies considerably between providers, so reading what is and is not included matters more than the headline premium.

Intentional damage is generally excluded. Also not covered are damages to rented or borrowed items (depending on the tariff) and professionally caused damage. Vehicle damage is covered by separate car liability insurance.
Experts recommend at least 10 million euros in coverage for personal injury and property damage. Many modern tariffs already offer 50 million euros. The price difference between 5 and 50 million is often small.
