No-Claims Class Calculator
Your no-claims class (SF class) largely determines your car insurance premium. Select your current class to see the typical premium factor.
What is the SF class?
The no-claims class (SF class) is a system used by German car insurers to assess your driving history. The longer you drive without causing an accident, the higher your SF class — and the less you pay for insurance.
The system works like a bonus-malus principle: each accident-free year moves you one step up (upgrade). If you cause an accident, you are moved several steps back (downgrade). This rewards safe drivers and distributes risk more fairly.
New drivers are typically assigned SF ½. Experienced drivers can transfer their SF class from a family member (class transfer), which can significantly reduce premiums.
What does the premium factor mean?
The premium factor shows what percentage of the base premium (the insurer's base rate) you actually pay. The base premium is calculated internally by the insurer and depends on factors such as vehicle type, region, and mileage.
💡 Example: Your base premium is €800. At SF 5 (factor 65%), you pay €800 × 0.65 = €520 per year. At SF 15 (factor 40%), it would be only €320.
For comparison: SF 1 = 95 %
How does the SF class develop?
Every year in which you do not cause damage and do not make a claim, you are automatically moved up one class. The adjustment happens on the anniversary of your insurance contract.
Downgrade after an accident
If you cause an accident and your liability or comprehensive insurance pays out, you will be downgraded at the next contract anniversary — often by several classes at once. The exact downgrade depends on the insurer; the table below shows typical values:
💡 Tip: You can pay for the damage yourself within a certain period (usually 6 weeks after the claim settlement) to avoid the downgrade. This is especially worthwhile for smaller damages.
