Pet Health Insurance
Insure veterinary costs for dogs and cats.
Last reviewed: 29 May 2026
Pet health insurance in Germany covers veterinary costs when your dog or cat falls ill or is injured. As veterinary fees in Germany continue to rise, a single surgical procedure or long-term treatment can quickly amount to several thousand euros. Pet insurance protects you from unexpected financial strain and ensures your animal receives the best possible care.
There are two main types of pet health insurance: full health coverage (Krankenvollschutz), which typically includes outpatient consultations, medications, laboratory tests, vaccinations, and operations, and surgery-only cover (OP-Versicherung). Surgery-only policies are more affordable but limited strictly to surgical procedures.
Key factors to consider when choosing a policy include the reimbursement rate (commonly 70%, 80%, or 100% of the invoice), the deductible per treatment or per year, waiting periods after the policy start, and any caps on specific treatments. Pre-existing conditions are almost always excluded, so insuring your pet while young and healthy is strongly recommended.
One important technical detail: German veterinary fees are regulated by the Gebührenordnung für Tierärzte (GOT), the official fee schedule for vets. Many policies only reimburse up to the simple or double GOT rate – look for a policy that covers at least triple the GOT rate to ensure adequate protection. Also check whether preventive care such as vaccinations, neutering, or dental cleaning is included if these services matter to you.
