Daily sickness allowance

Daily sickness allowance (Krankentagegeld) is an insurance benefit that pays an agreed daily rate from a specified day of incapacity to work. It is primarily aimed at self-employed individuals and freelancers who are not entitled to continued pay. Employees typically receive six weeks of continued pay and then sickness benefit from the GKV — for them, the daily allowance can bridge the gap between GKV sickness benefit and actual net income.
