Compensation for pain and suffering

Schmerzensgeld is compensation for non-material damages — such as physical pain, psychological suffering, or impairment to quality of life resulting from an injury. Unlike compensation for material losses (e.g. medical costs, lost earnings), the amount of Schmerzensgeld cannot be precisely calculated and is determined at the court's discretion. Liability insurance also covers justified Schmerzensgeld claims.
