Compulsory insurance threshold (JAEG)
The Jahresarbeitsentgeltgrenze (JAEG) is the annual income threshold above which employees are no longer required to be in the GKV and may switch to private health insurance (PKV). In 2024 it stands at €69,300 gross annual income. Those who consistently earn above this threshold can freely choose between GKV and PKV. Self-employed individuals and civil servants are generally not subject to GKV.
