Sum insured

The sum insured is the maximum amount an insurer pays in the event of a claim. It is agreed at the time of contract and forms the upper limit of the insurer's payment obligation. In life insurance, it is the guaranteed payout upon death or contract maturity. In property insurance, the sum insured should reflect the actual value of the insured item to avoid underinsurance.
